Most people who live in New York City don’t have cars. I think they are onto something.
Television, movies, and the news show the glamorous city life with the blocks of traffic, hundreds of little yellow cabs, horns honking, people yelling and of course, the occasional limo we are sure is occupied by Ryan Reynolds. Now I would consider myself a good driver. I’ve been told I’ve got great instincts, but I would never drive in the city.
Let me flashback to the other night. My family and I were going into the city to see a show and were sitting in traffic when I noticed this scary look in the eyes of the driver trying to cut us off. Then I looked around and noticed this crazed look in the eyes of most of the rush hour commuters everywhere. Sitting in the passenger’s seat of my mother’s minivan, a huge bus is inches away from my right, another minivan coming in on a diagonal to my left, and crazed eyes everywhere! They inch forward, we inch a bit more forward. This nonsense goes on block after block. Seems pointless, but apparently this is how you must drive in the city. It’s survival of the fittest out there. And it’s DANGEROUS!
So the point of this post? Society seems to excuse these unsafe drivers because it’s NYC. This attitude has spread to all places where rush hour traffic is at its worst. We can’t let this mentality become excusable. So earn some karma.
Once a day, I am going to let someone merge in front of me on the highway, or let a car come out of the 7 Eleven parking lot (which is the worst). Because if each driver did one friendly wave a day, the road would be a more friendly, safer place.
